Primary Colors

Trying to blame this due to my exposure and working in digital world, RGB(red, green, blue) is what always pops immediately in my head whenever I hear about primary colors. But of course, I need to correct myself as it is Red, Yellow, and Blue.

When I read about this week’s challenge, I told to myself that its going to be a bit of a challenge to find good photos from my archive as recent photos I am making have mostly greens. And yes, that is after correcting myself that green is a secondary color. Mostly having greens because I got into nature photography. In any case, good thing google photos to the rescue, I can just typed in “red” to search for photos having red in my archive, and so on. It was convenient for sure.

Blue sky

This photo is recent and I actually made it for this challenge. I went to the park to create photos and hoping I can find composition for all the primary colors. With regards to this image, I decided this composition because I was able to frame the sky with trees nearby and the shapes of the clouds match with the leaves. Moreover, there is a good subtle gradient of blue so as to make image interesting and not flat.

Kugenuma Beach, Kanagawa

View of Kugenuma Beach from Enoshima. Made this photo because of the sail boat in the center and the water trail made from another boat crossing. I made sure the shrubs on both sides were captured to provide layer in the photo. I thought those elements have a good story to tell. This was quite challenging as I was standing on uneven lawn and people were appreciating the scenery in front of me as well.

Leaves turning yellow

Definitely not yet autumn. This photo was made at the same timing with blue sky. I was feeling lucky that time as I looked into the ground to see if there was something interesting composition to be made. Two colors down I told to myself, but to be honest I was hoping if there will be a good yellow flowers around. Not that lucky I guess.

Slide at a small park in Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa

Red and Yellow. I decided to made this photo as the colors are very striking and the composition is quite simple in which the subject will be in focus. While writing this, I double looked into the photo, at the ladder behind particularly. I tried to edit the shadows to see if it was blue. And yes, it is blue. Perhaps this photo qualifies for the extra challenge. However, for this composition I want to retain this as a red and yellow subject as I have something for last.

Dandelion

Yellow surrounded by green. This photo was made late spring. Nothing much interesting around in a park as cherry blossoms already turned green. Hence, I went after to these small flowers as I have noticed them making contrast in the ground.

Red poppy

Red. My wife and I have recently found ourselves a hobby to hunt for flower places in Tokyo. This one in Showa Memorial Park is the best one we found so far. The poppies were not yet in full bloom as I have observed when this photo was made. Some were still buds and some seedlings around were yet to be planted. I am hoping for a cooler summer next year so we can go again.

Eastern Rosella

Primary color bird. The color of this bird’s feather is quite astonishing when I saw it with my naked eye. I wish to see again so I can make a photo with my current camera.

I believe primary colors are somehow wired to us. Even if we don’t really know the meaning of each color, there will always be an emotion or a signal associated whenever we see one. This challenge made me think to take color as critical component on establishing the mood of the composition.

  1. You had me laughing at first because I can relate to the “green” thing. Green is my favorite color and like you I am a lover of nature. That said…you sure met the challenge with stellar results. The leaf and the slide were great finds. I hope the red poppy field is in bloom for you again next year. I think it is beautiful THIS year and can only imagine it in full bloom. The rosella is a perfect find, and I think my favorite photo is the dandelion. The simplicity and the clarity kind of giving it a stage. A pleasure to visit, Dan.

  2. The first thing I noticed was how beautifully framed your first shots are. I love the slide (it does qualify for the extra challenge) but my absolute favourite has to be the poppies. The mood is extraordinary, the movement, everything.
